In the September Journal Club session, Drs. Hosick and Robida will present two articles related to:
- CRISPR-Cas9 gene-edited allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation with gemtuzumab ozogamicin maintenance in acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
- Azacitidine-venetoclax versus induction chemotherapy for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
Presenters & Articles:
Madeleine Hosick, PharmD
PGY-2 Pharmacy Resident
Duke University Hospital
Article: CRISPR−Cas9 CD33-delet hematopoietic cell transp gemtuzumab ozogamicin AML: a phase 1/2 trial
Olivia Robida, PharmD
PGY-2 Pharmacy Resident
The Ohio State University - Wexner Medical Center
Article: Azacitidine–Venetoclax or Induction Chemotherapy for Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Session Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of the activity, participants should be able to:
- List the most common post-hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) maintenance strategies and limitations of these standards of care.
- Discuss the efficacy and clinical implications of Tremtelectogene empogeditemcel (trem-cel) for maintenance in acute myeloid leukemia after allogenic HCT.
- Recognize the risks and toxicities associated with CRISPR-edited gene products in general, and specifically trem-cel in post-HCT patients.
- Review up-front treatment options for newly diagnosed, induction-eligible acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and the rationale for testing azacitidine–venetoclax against standard intensive 7+3 induction chemotherapy.
- Describe the safety and efficacy of azacitidine–venetoclax versus intensive induction chemotherapy for event-free survival in the PARADIGM phase 2 trial.
- Discuss clinical utility and applicability of azacitidine–venetoclax as up-front therapy for induction-eligible AML.
